Huge Tidal Waves Hit Papua New Guinea More big swells could be heading for Papua New Guinea's New Ireland province, which is still struggling to assess the damage caused by unusually high king tides that struck earlier this week. Global warming, volcanic activity and a huge swell from Hawaii are just some of the explanations for the huge seas this week. The waves washed away costal village houses or shuddered them up to 50 metres inland. Disaster officials say several thousand people could be effected. Papua New Guinea's national weather office has warned more big swells are on their way. The KTF is assisting where it can with the coordination of emergency resources. Latest developments: - Overseas Disaster Resources is preparing a shipment of emergency equipment for immediate despatch - Once again DHL has come to our aid and will arrange for the shipment to be trucked to Brisbane and then sent by air via a company named Heavylift which provides a regular air charter service to Port Moresby - Air Niugini will then fly the shipment to Kavieng on New Ireland - The Governor of New Ireland, Sir Julius Chan, will organise with the local authorities for distribution to those in most need - Kori Chan from South Sea Horizons is liaising with the locals More information on the relief effort can be found here: PROGRESSIVE-REPORTS-NO-03-NATIONAL DISASTER-08 EAST COAST NEW IRELAND TIDAL WAVE DISASTER 9TH DECEMBER 2008 East New Irleand 1 Disaster Updates
