Cocktail Party Raises Awareness and Grows Support

POSTED BY ON 28 May 2010

Despite some miserable weather conditions in Sydney and a pretty important sporting event taking place on the same evening, the board of directors of the Kokoda Track Foundation were thrilled to host its Annual General Meeting and Cocktail Party at Blake Dawson on Wednesday evening. We welcomed a wonderful turnout at the event including Major General Michael Jeffery (the former Governor General of Australia and patron of the Foundation) and His Excellency Charles Lepani, the High Commissioner of PNG.

chairman Patrick Lindsay and Magas, a Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels scholarship holderOur new members were welcomed and we held our AGM where three of our directors were re-elected to stand for another 3 year term.  We were then privileged to hear from Major General Michael Jeffery who spoke about Australia’s connection with Papua New Guinea and vital work of the Foundation in over 30 communities throughout the country. His Excellency Mr Lepani then honoured the PNG people and the KTF’s efforts to improve life quality along the Kokoda Track. He spoke of a new era for both the Australian and PNG Governments who are beginning to realise the value of investing funds through grassroots, not-for-profit organisation such as the KTF when trying to deliver aid in PNG.

We were also delighted to have a local Oro Province dance troupe perform for our guests. The troupe were generously brought down to Sydney by the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority and they welcomed our guests in full tribal costumes and depicted part of the Kokoda story through song and dance. The dance troupe will also join us this weekend in Melbourne where they will be performing at the Kokoda Game being hosted by the Hawthorn AFL Club at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The evening was a wonderful opportunity to say thanks to the many generous people who have supported us over the past 12 months and to our corporate partners. Magas Iori, one of our Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel scholarship holders, spoke to our guests about the difference a scholarship makes for a child in PNG and we were thrilled when a number of our guests committed to adopting an angel and supporting our scholarship students.

Thank you to everyone who came along to the AGM and Cocktail Party - we are very grateful for all the ongoing support that you have shown for our work in PNG and it was a wonderful opportunity to meet our new members.

Please help us to Keep the Spirit of Kokoda Alive...
